In today\u2019s tech-driven society, the emergence of social media has undeniably transformed the way we view and treat global trends. Being a double-edged sword, while it connects us to global trends, it also accelerates the\u00a0<\/span>homogenisation<\/span>\u00a0of cultures. In Hong Kong, a city which was once celebrated for its cosmopolitan development and global\u00a0<\/span>branding, but<\/span>\u00a0often comes at the cost of its unique local identity. Traditional aesthetics, once deeply rooted in my life, are now sinking beneath the surface of the iceberg, modern uniformity \u2014\u00a0<\/span>Homogenisation<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Imagine walking into almost any major city\u00a0<\/span>today,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you\u2019ll<\/span>\u00a0find the same minimalist cafes with black and white walls, hanging plants, and overpriced lattes. On the contrary,\u00a0<\/span>a far cry from<\/span>\u00a0the chaotic charm of\u00a0<\/span>a cha<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>chaan<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>teng<\/span>, tea-stained menus, clattering dishes, and vivid lights, in my perspective, this is what tells stories of Hong Kong\u2019s local life. The rise of \u201cglobal aesthetic slop<\/span><\/span>\u201d,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a term in the news article, which brilliantly captures the visual sameness spreading in different cities, always reflects on how platforms like TikTok and Instagram are barring cultural expression into a bland and copy-pasted aesthetics. But for our grandparents\u2019 generation, aesthetics and cultures\u00a0<\/span>wasn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0just something filtered and polished to cater for global needs and trends, but flickering neon signs and the dramatic singing of Cantonese opera, something never found ubiquitous\u00a0<\/span>in today\u2019s society<\/span>, all specially tied to Hong Kong and memory. Today, however, schools often\u00a0<\/span>emphasise<\/span>\u00a0global citizenship over local heritage, and students may not even\u00a0<\/span>recognise<\/span>\u00a0cultural icons of their own neighborhoods. It makes me think, is caring about where we come from becoming uncool or are we just too distracted by what\u2019s trending to notice what is dramatically dwindling\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Furthermore, local culture and aesthetics\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0often flattened and\u00a0<\/span>commercialised<\/span>. They are often reduced to surface-level aesthetics\u00a0<\/span>in order to<\/span>\u00a0go viral. What once held deep meaning is now repackaged and sold, stripped of authenticity. I remember walking into a boutique in Wan Chai<\/span>, the<\/span>\u00a0shop was filled with products wrapped in nostalgic, old-style packaging that instantly attracted tourists. But while it looks like it celebrated local heritage, I\u00a0<\/span>couldn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0help feeling that it was more about profit than preservation. These businesses often borrow the image of tradition without appreciating the artisans who keep those traditions alive. And Neon signs \u2014 once a vibrant part of our city\u2019s identity \u2014 are now being removed from the streets and hung in the galleries, as if they belong behind the glass rather than lighting up our everyday lives<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Personally, I feel torn. On one hand, I am proud when aspects of Hong Kong\u2019s culture gain global attention, whether\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Cantonese slang in a viral video or a neon lit photo trending online. But on the other hand, it often feels like our culture is being borrowed and sold without real understanding or respect. This is not just\u00a0<\/span>commercialisation<\/span>\u00a0but borders on cultural appropriation<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Thus, the shift raises another\u00a0<\/span>difficult question<\/span>\u00a0in my mind<\/span>, must<\/span>\u00a0we sacrifice our cultural identity to succeed in a\u00a0<\/span>globalised<\/span>\u00a0society?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

First and foremost<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in order to<\/span>\u00a0achieve\u00a0<\/span>a cultural<\/span>\u00a0rebirth, efforts must begin with the youth. Education plays a pivotal role in shaping local identity. Not through\u00a0<\/span>lectures, but<\/span>\u00a0letting them\u00a0<\/span>to feel<\/span>\u00a0the charm of local aesthetic and culture<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>I still remember walking through Sham Shui Po as a child,\u00a0<\/span>mesmerised<\/span>\u00a0by the beauty of hand-painted shop signs, the layers of neon in the evening glow. But when I returned years later, I almost got lost. The old\u00a0<\/span>dai<\/span>\u00a0pai dongs had become bubble tea chains. The neon signs were replaced by flat-lit logos. The corners that once screamed \u201cHong Kong\u201d now say \u201cinternational.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0when I\u00a0<\/span>realised<\/span>\u00a0how silently and secretly\u00a0<\/span>homogenisation<\/span>\u00a0invades with quiet replacements. This is why education must do more than teach dates and\u00a0<\/span>history,<\/span>\u00a0curriculums should include local aesthetics into everyday learning. Let students learn about vintage neon, study urban planning through walking between Kowloon Walled City. From time to time,\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0embedded.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

To its credit, the Hong Kong government has already laid some groundwork in cultural preservation though more can be done. For instance, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office (ICHO) was\u00a0<\/span>established<\/span>. The\u00a0<\/span>Revitalising<\/span>\u00a0Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme has converted colonial and Chinese-style heritage buildings into creative hubs, such as the\u00a0<\/span>revitalisation<\/span>\u00a0of the Blue House Cluster into a living community museum and so much more. However, that\u00a0<\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0stop the invasion of modern sameness via social media.\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0why the government should think from every perspective to blend \u2018Hong Kong Aesthetic\u2019 into our everyday life such as launching sponsorship schemes for endangered craftsmanship. At the same time, public spaces can also be reclaimed as cultural laboratories, galleries in housing estates and tram art projects,\u00a0<\/span>etc.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

To protect culture from being flattened into a \u2018global sea<\/span><\/span>\u2019,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0we must first make it visible and meaningful to the next generation and even ours. Culture must be more than remembered but re-experienced in the picture of my mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

In order to<\/span>\u00a0reclaim our future, we must first live it. If we use\u00a0<\/span>homogenisation<\/span>\u00a0to blur our identity, Hong Kong risks becoming a city with no soul, just surface.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>
